Keep an Eye Out for This Common Garden Pest

Spider mite damage
|

A common occurrence that happens particularly during the hot, dry season in many gardens is the appearance of yellowing on leaves or conifer needles, and dense webbing amongst plant life. These symptoms may be a strong indicator of a spider mite infestation. The good news is that there are numerous ways to purge these annoying pests from your gardens and landscape areas. DeSantis Landscapes can provide you with a proper diagnosis, and options that range from purely organic to conventional spray treatments. You can choose which application is best for your landscape and continue to grow free from spider mite damage!

There are some mixed home remedies available online that may be helpful, but you can also start treatment by using a garden hose. Simply spray all areas that look affected, concentrating on the underside of foliage. If there’s indication of spider mites on indoor plants, it is recommended that they be sprayed with a hose outdoors, if possible. Another method of removal is to use rubbing alcohol and wipe down the entirety of plant leaves, particularly. Neem oil is another option that is also very effective against powdery mildew and mites. Infected leaves should be snipped and removed from plants, as well as fallen leaves on the ground, and disposed of properly. Introducing beneficial insects, like ladybugs and predacious thrips can help wipe out colonies of mites. The only hitch is keeping them in your garden area. Borage and amaranth will keep ladybugs attracted.

Should you opt to blast spider mites with a conventional spray, please note that pesticides containing imidacloprid, malathion or carbaryl will not only kill the spider mites, but beneficial insects, as well. Also, after about three treatments in one season, resistance against the chemical may build in spider mite population.
